Please don’t comment unless you’re really her. Thank you.
Dear Mrs. Levine, I tried to leave a comment on your blog, but I couldn’t get it to work. It was for your post, “transformations.” Here’s what I tried to say:
Wow, your way sure is messy, but I guess it must work.
My way doesn’t really work.
What I do is I sometimes write notes, but not often, because to me it’s almost harder then writing the story. More often, I just write a few paragraphs feverishly. (Almost never a whole page, I don’t usually get that far, you’ll find out why in a sec.)
Then I stop. (Sometimes suddenly, other times not.)
I stop because I suddenly I don’t know what to have happen next, or sometimes even where I want to take the story.
So I sit on it.
Then sleep on it.
A week passes by.
A month.
Two months.
Suddenly, I get an idea. I let it bounce around in my head for who-knows-how-long, then I might write it down, or change the story to fit.
Then I go back and fix typos, spelling, and confusing sentences at least 10 times, even though I’m only drafting.
I have never completed a novel, although I’ve started many. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever gotten to four pages in the same story. Three is really rare. Any ideas how I can be more, I don’t know, efficient?
P.S. Writing Magic really helped me get started. Is there any chance of a sequel? It’s ok if there’s not, I’ll just read this bog.
P.P.S. If it helps, I write fantasy novels. Or try to.
